Berlin Garden of the Dispossessed - New works by David Hochbaum. Featuring Ver Mar in The Vault!

Bild zur Meldung

Bild zur Meldung

Reception for the artists October 9th at 7 p.m.
After his last solo show at Strychnin Gallery Berlin in November 2008, American artist David Hochbaum returns with new works – this time going back to his roots in the darkroom. Presenting mixed media works based on black and white photographs, Hochbaum’s preoccupation with houses, labyrinthine streets and cityscapes reaches a new level of perfection in these carefully layered works. Ver Mar, whose sculptures of oceanic mythological creatures have already been seen in a few group shows at Strychnin Gallery, is showing a full-blown installation in Europe for the first time in The Vault, Strychnin’s exhibition room reserved for special occasions.

This show is supported by Modart Europe and the Wallbreakers Festival!

The latest works by North American artist David Hochbaum are inspired by the city, most of all New York City, where he was born and has now been living and working for the past 14 years. The work gives testimony to the time spent and dues paid to a cut throat and unforgiving environment.
The many tableaus in Hochbaum's latest series of works contain several complex layers of materials. The artist creates claustrophobic cities, flaunting the grandiose expression of man’s desire to achieve and progress beyond the heavens, cutting into the sky, obstructing the clear horizons. He has also created contradicting images of trees and forests, which come across more as figurative studies of people rather than timber. The city landscapes also take on an almost human quality although one does not see a single person inside them, unless looming over the buildings like giants, completely out of proportion to the cities' scale.
In contrast to the images presenting outer cityscapes, Hochbaum then seems to zoom inside to show a more tranquil interior. He presents singular portraits of the possible inhabitants of the towns, sleeping in the grass, contemplating on the riverside, or traversing through the gardens. The quality of these works is more related to photography and maintains more integrity to the medium of the black and white silver print than to painting. But not unlike most of Hochbaum’s body of work, the materials are slashed, varnished and written upon, adding texture and the evidence of life to the surface.

American artist Ver Mar is fascinated by the cinema of Tim Burton, Jan Svankmajer, and Jim Henson among others. The concept of stop action films and period pieces where elaborate production design involving lavish costumes, make up and sets are her inspiration. Her sculptures are monuments to sea-creatures and half-human, half-animal crossbreeds, portraits of the secret dream rulers of this world.
Her latest show in Strychnin Gallery Berlin's special showroom called The Vault is inspired by mankind's desire before the age of science to understand nature and themselves by coming up with imaginative explanations, creating myths, legends and symbolism in the process that define all of our cultures until today. The contradictions resulting from changing interpretations of these symbols are fascinating to the artist, whose work is especially influenced by Chinese and European symbolism and mythology.

Also featuring Myths, Omens and Misunderstandings - Ver Mar in The Vault.

Berlin A Space in all the Noise: New Works by Jason Shawn Alexander and Gene Guynn. Reception for the artists on September 4th, 2009, at 7 pm.

Bild zur Meldung

American painter Jason Shawn Alexander is a self-taught artist: never having attended formal art school, art language and "isms" mean nothing to him. The things that matter in his work are honesty and emotion, and while it is his aim to make people think, it is first and foremost to make them feel. His works have been exhibited all over the USA, most recently also in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, and in Europe. Bringing to mind painters such as Lucian Freud, his portraits often picture uncomfortably physical embodiments of his subjects’ emotions.

Jason Shawn Alexander has also produced illustrations for Warner Brothers, Hasboro, White Wolf Inc, and Dalmatian Press. He has received the Silver Medal Award from The Society of illustrators-Los Angeles as well as two Eisner Award Nominations for his illustrative work, which includes “Abe Sapien – The Drowning” for Mike Magnola (creator of Hellboy).

ATTENTION PLEASE: THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL SIGNING WITH JASON SHAWN ALEXANDER ON SEPTEMBER 4TH BETWEEN 7 - 11 PM!!
Some of his comic books will be available during the opening with a chance to get them signed by the artist thanks to our sponsor MODERN GRAPHICS. We'd also like to thank Black Dog Comics, Grober Unfug and "Roman- und Comicladen" for their support.

Gene Guynn defines his portraits through a symbolic scar that stands for each person's past experiences, memories and emotions. Born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, he was immersed in the art world from a very young age. With a painter for a mother and a musician for a father, his world was always one of creativity and expression. Gene takes inspiration from the thriving urban, outsider, and lowbrow art culture of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City, and combines it with a fine art sophistication.

Elsewhere Mimi S. - Solo Show at Perihelion Gallery starting September 4th!

Bild zur Meldung

Perihelion Gallery presents

Distinctions: Two Solo Exhibitions

Derek Hess (OH) and Mimi S. (Germany)

Perihelion Arts is excited to present two artists who, while utilizing different mediums, create exceptional works that showcase an array of emotions from the very humorous to the very dark, sometimes blending the two. Fine art mixed media pieces by Derek Hess are full of motion, intense energy and an elegant chaos. Digital paintings by Mimi S. blend a sensual palette with precision and a fun, sultry spirit, resulting in an array of multi-dimensional characters. Each artist's work is a visually stunning, thought-provoking journey through the human condition and it's many, many layers - their unique, individual styles the distinguishing factor.

Mimi S. was born in Berlin in 1974. In her early childhood days she started to draw, influenced by her beloved mother, who was an artist herself in her lifetime and played a major role in Mimi's creative development. The fact that drawing was an absolute priority in her life brought her to the University of Arts / Berlin and later to the Film University to study
traditional animation.
After graduation, she worked as a character designer and illustrator on several animation projects for the film industry; however, she found this unsatisfactory in the end. Her true passion always was illustrating solely her own ideas and figures. Primarily having drawn and painted most of her life, she discovered the computer for coloring her drawings and it
soon became one of her favorite tools. Step by step her illustrations evolved to digital paintings. She loves to draw girls with a special attitude and allure, an obstinate personality and a strange beauty, which seems to appear in a certain, grotesque way. If you look at "her" girls, you'll find that defiant and moody expression on their faces which she
herself describes as "a little ridiculous" sometimes, often reminding her of female members or ancestors of her own family, especially her grandmother. Although she loves to tell emotional stories of the dark side of female nature in her paintings, it always has to be accompanied by a portion of evil humor and sarcasm, which is mostly hidden in the detail.

Mimi's work has been featured in DIE WELT (Germany), Coming Up Magazine (France), DIF Magazine (Portugal), New Talents TV and more.

Perihelion Arts holds our opening receptions as part of Artlink's First Fridays monthly art walk.

Berlin The Red Thread - a Group Exhibition featuring Bethany Marchman, Edith Lebeau and Jennybird Alcantara. Opens August 7th!

Bild zur Meldung

Bild zur Meldung

Opens August 7th from 7 pm until 11 pm
Runs until August 30th

Somewhere between traditional techniques and the influence of contemporary pop culture, three women artists from the USA and Canada create strong women portraits. Whether in oil, acrylics, or as curious hand-made dolls that are reminiscent of characters created by Tim Burton: Strychnin Gallery’s August exhibition presents unique works of great expressive power.
Bethany Marchman’s paintings quote from a rich variety of sources. Humorous as well as melancholic undertones enchant the viewer and encourage him to ponder meanings, for example whether growth is always synonymous with improvement. Marchman’s miniatures are highly political and the current state of affairs has long caught up with their traditional appearance. Yet Marchman’s works are also popular with pop culture enthusiasts: her works could recently be seen in the comedy hit “Juno” with Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner.

Jennybird Alcantara’s oil paintings are mainly done on wood. Inspired by her own paintings, however, she also creates delicately crafted dolls. She says: “My work has at its core a narrative; I like to explore the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. I use the symbolism of duality to explore the connection of life and death, as well as the relationship between the beauty and cruelness of nature, that of the natural world as well as human and animal nature.” Jennybird Alcantara‘s beautifully eerie dolls will be seen in Europe for the first time at Strychnin Gallery in Berlin.

Edith Lebeau grew up in Beloeil, a little town of Quebec, Canada. As a young girl, her artistic development was influenced by a fascination with popular culture, Greek, Roman, and Celtic mythology, movies and fairytales – influences that continue to be seen in her work today. Lebeau mostly paints female figures, portraying them as superheroes, villains, goddesses, and nymphs, their look being the most important thing in her work: they tell their own story through their expressions and emotions. A certain ambiguity is intentional – Lebeau often blurs the story to encourage the audience to make it their own, letting the character question the viewer.

Opens July 10th at 7 pm - runs until August 2nd.
Davey Jones and Dayvid LeMmon are two American artists working with the medium of photography. Through digital manipulation and post production, both achieve stunning effects: While Jones' work takes you straight into an action-packed movie set, LeMmon's work is reminiscent of monochromatic etchings of the Old Masters – or movies by Ingmar Bergmann.

Lisa Mei Ling Fong is an assemblage artist. She assembles and arranges personal collections of relics in her signature "Introversion Boxes" to create sentimental memorials. Her works will be shown in The Vault, Strychnin Gallery's exhibition room reserved for special features and showcases.

Berlin BRIGHT LIGHTS - DARK SHADOWS opens May 8th at 7p.m.

Bild zur Meldung

Bild zur Meldung

Bright Lights – Dark Shadows is a two-man show featuring Chris von Steiner vs. MKan. Also presenting “Free from Slavery” – François Escalmel in The Vault. Runs until June 7th.

“Childhood is commonly regarded as the happiest time of human life. Growing up into adulthood however, we tend to forget that childhood is also a world of fears, tears, nightmares, drama and violence. So many seemingly insignificant events, traumatic in nature, shape us into the current version of our selves: Under the bright lights of childhood grow the seeds of our lives’ dark shadows. Good or bad, angel or devil, we are all essentially the same: Peter Pan forever bound to an unending, inescapable childhood experience. These are the themes I have attempted to explore with this new series of work entitled Bright Lights – Dark Shadows.” – Chris von Steiner

Welcome to the world of French visual artist Chris von Steiner. Using his fantasies, dreams and desires, von Steiner creates digital fairytales out of the stories he grew up with, stories that have since turned into eerie tales of passion, fear, loneliness, pride, innocence and hope. Combining the pop icons of his youth with bold colors, elements from movies, music, books, and television, Chris von Steiner’s digital paintings have a haunting familiarity right upon first sight. Like a pop song touching your heart and sticking in your mind, von Steiner’s works invade your memory and stir up tales you can get lost in. He has exhibited all over Europe and the USA; this is his second exhibition at Strychnin Gallery Berlin.

Showing in Berlin for the first time will be French artist MKan. Through personal mythology and metaphoric language, MKan has created a family of strange allegorical characters in his own image. Their metamorphoses make them ridiculous, sending each one back to his respective archetypal universe where violence reigns as the absolute king. With the nose of a black clown, they claim a complete state of entertainment, auto-mockery, and the absurd. It is thus a self-centered universe, always ironic and marked by unrefined codes, that MKan advances in – welcome to the Jungle Camp!

Also presenting “Free from Slavery” – New works by François Escalmel in The Vault. The Vault is Strychnin’s back room that is reserved for special exhibitions.

Canadian artist François Escalmel primarily deals with aspects of identity and all questions related to this topic. Communication, love, isolation, role models, the value of artistic endeavor and the place of the individual within a group, all these are topics his latest series of works have explored through different metaphors. Working in photography, painting, and digital drawing, Escalmel also writes poetry and uses it as the foundation of his visual works, sometimes mixing in words. He often appears in the works himself, whether it is in the form of self-portraits or as a character inserted into photographs of miniature sets in post-production on the computer. Alongside images from popular culture, such as actors from movies or contemporary fashion, he is influenced by Naturalism and the notion of “artifact”- false old documents that evoke a turn in mentalities in some imaginary time and place.

In 2008, Los Angeles based composer and producer Jörg Hüttner, who has worked on the soundtracks of such films as "The Ring II" or "Batman Begins" for Hollywood star-composer Hans Zimmer, created exclusive music for the art exhibition “Labyrinth” at Strychnin Gallery Berlin, presenting Canadian artist Richard A. Kirk and Benelux-based artist Raf Veulemans.
The amazing ambient-electronica instrumental album that is the soundtrack to the "Labyrinth" exhibition has now been released as a 45 minute-long gapless album that is available as a beautiful 6-panel Digipack CD with a 12-page poster-fold booklet through the Strychnin Gallery or the usual online download centers (iTunes, Amazon, Magnatune.com).
Besides great down-tempo instrumental score-inspired music, the digipack is a work of art in and of itself: its cover features Richard A. Kirk's work “The Riddle” and the beautifully designed album also contains additional art work by Kirk, as well as an excerpt from a novel by writer Tim Mizelle, which is based on and inspired by Kirkʼs art.
Among many other things, Richard Kirk has created the album cover for US metal superstars “Korn” for their “Untitled” album in 2007, and has illustrated several books for the famous British writer and director Clive Barker. Kirk is represented by Strychnin Gallery.

Her first photography book titled "Die Farben der Träume" ( “The Color of Dreams” ) was published very successfully in 2004 and received international recognition. Her second book titled "Wahre Märchen" ( “True Fairy Tales” ) was published in August 2008, and it is the works from this book that can now be seen at Strychnin Gallery.
To accompany the opening night, Scream Silence with their front man Hardy Fieting will be playing an acoustic set. Scream Silence have been active in the music scene for over 10 years.

Interested in psychology, physiognomy and body language, works by British painter Suzzan Blac are not for the faint of heart. Negative feelings, pain, anger and frustration are the motives behind them, often making them uncomfortable to look at through their intense, direct expression of strong emotions. Blac is interested in the darker aspects of human feeling: her latest series of paintings, to be seen at Strychnin Gallery’s new London collaboration partner Resistance Gallery, is about the sexual and social conditioning and exploitation of females.

In their works, this conflict is played out very differently though - while Veulemans stresses the beauty of decay and fragility of life in his taxidermist sculptures and installations featuring the bodies of real animals, Janssens’ sculptures are completely man-made and focus on the struggle of overcoming a mere physical existence. Often, his figures appear to wish they could escape from the sufferings their bodies are exposed to by battered machines and strange apparatuses holding them captive, and to release their battered spirits. The works of American artist Christina Graf will be presented in The Vault, Strychnin’s back room that is reserved for individual artists on special occasions . Graf’s delicate and highly detailed works are made of paper.

Berlin WHALELESS. An international group show for the whales. Curated by Giovanni Cervi and Res Pira. March 27th 2009.

Bild zur Meldung

“Whaleless” is an art project dedicated to those artists wishing to express their indignation, rage, shame, disbelief or concern about the slow disappearance of the fascinating giant marine mammals. Pollution, whaling and unacceptable fishing practices are only some of the causes that seriously endanger their survival. It seems that they are slowly but inevitably growing extinct, while the consequences of their gradual disappearance are impossible to predict. And yet we can be certain that the world’s ecosystem – not just the oceans’ but that of our entire planet – will be affected by this change. The world would not be the same without whales, which is why action needs to be taken immediately. To this end, a percentage from sales will be donated to the WDCS (Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society)!

The project “Whaleless” was born 4 years ago on the pages of the Italian Pig magazine and on whaleless.com; after receiving more than 200 artworks from all over the world (from the USA to Honk Kong, from Russia to Venezuela) and hundreds of thousands of clicks on the website, “Whaleless” started its international tour at Strychnin Gallery London in July 2008. The exhibition has since travelled to La Rochelle and Florence, and will continue to travel over the next few years, trying to raise awareness for this global environmental problem.

The WDCS was founded in England in 1987 and works exclusively for the protection of whales and dolphins. Together with a global network of scientists and activists WDCS works continuously on improving the situation of the worlds whales, dolphins and their marine habitat. WDCS Experts have a say in various regional and international boards and committees, including the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). The WDCS either runs or funds projects in all the worlds oceans to learn more about cetaceans, the threats these animals face and effectively work towards a better protection through improved legislation and the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

“Whaleless” was conceptualized by the Italian curators Giovanni Cervi and Res Pira.

Artists featured include (among others) Ashley Wood, Catalina Estrada, Stuart Semple, Wayne Chisnall, Lee Baker, Arianna Carossa, Squp, Chris Bonobo, Ryan Obermeyer (flyer and poster art), Zaelia Bishop, Aurélien Police, Nicoz Balboa, Giuliano Sale, Silvia Argiolas, Kokomoo, Tamara Ferioli, Marie Luise Emmermann, Bethany Marchman, Jennybird, LostFish, Lisa Mei Ling Fong, Wade Furlong, Chris von Steiner, Comoseta, Angie Mason, Mimi S., Ansgar Noeth, Zoe Lacchei and Guillermo Rigattieri. Berlin DANIEL VAN NES - Fallen Angels. Featuring special guests VIRGINIE ROPARS, CLIFF WALLACE and MARINA BYCHKOVA. Opens December 12th, 7 p.m.

Bild zur Meldung

The real replaced by the virtual, oversaturation through the media and the ever-present TV screens with marketing messages that seep into our lives and dreams not unlike religious slogans – these are the themes of Dutch artist Daniël van Nes ’ new series of work. Playing with religious imagery and mixing it up with sub and underground cultures, the characters in his work are angels expelled from the Garden who find themselves utterly alone in their fall.

The works of special guest Virginie Ropars lie somewhere between sculpture, doll making, fashion design and illustration, building a dream-like reality featuring predominantly strong female characters.

Cliff Wallace , our special guest from England, is a creature designer for Creature Effects, a company largely responsible for the look and feel of films such as "Hellboy II", "Kingdom of Heaven" and "28 Days Later". His sculptures reflect the mysterious and strange worlds that he gets his inspiration from.

Marina Bychkova , our third special guest, is from Canada. Her dolls reflect the dark and sometimes threatening undertones that classic fairy tales often contain - they are fragile and vulnerable in their beauty.

Berlin MADELINE VON FOERSTER - Waldkammer. Opens November 7th at 7 p.m.

Bild zur Meldung

Incredible intensity and vividness of color are characteristic features of works by the old Dutch Masters such as Jan van Eyck or Hans Memling, who are among American artist Madeline von Foerster’s main sources of inspiration. Paintings of this time period achieved a great sense of touch through carefully applied light effects, which especially shows in the realistic, tactile display of folds of cloths and drapes. The basis of these astonishing works was the discovery of a new technique: oil painting. Von Foerster studied the so-called Misch technique in Austria under Philip Rubinov-Jacobson. This technique uses an elaborate method of layers to form the basis of the painting, and employs with oil as well as egg tempera. As one of very few artists today, Madeline von Foerster employs this complicated technique in her breathtaking work.

Bild zur Meldung

Says German photographer Sven Hoffmann, "eroticism to me is the curve of a line". His stagings of female bodies search for this line and play with it yet his photographs are not decpitions of erotic phantasies. Instead, they invite the viewer to discover sensual spaces and explore their own phantasies. For one exciting weekend in late October, Strychnin Gallery presents an exhibition of the Berlin artist.

Special guest is French photographer Lukas Zpira, whose colorful photographs are a mix between the Japanese Manga-aesthetic, an homage to Araki, and erotic pop photography. Titled „El maleficio de la mariposa“, his series of works was created in Japan. Zpira, whose latest book is titled "Tokio Love Doll" will be available at the opening.

VERNISSAGE SATURDAY, November 1st, from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.

Regular opening hours on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.
This show runs until November 4th.

Berlin DAVID HOCHBAUM: The Mysterious Action of Memory. Opens October 10th, 2008

Bild zur Meldung

Bild zur Meldung

We're excited to welcome back American artist David Hochbaum, who had his first solo exhibition at Strychnin Gallery Berlin in 2006. Following another solo show in London earlier this year, we are now bringing him back to Berlin with new works, one of which will also be presented at Art Fair 21 in Cologne from October 2nd until October 5th. Hochbaum will also be featured at Art Fair 21 with a gigantic installation consisting of 1000 birds in the Foyer and staircase of the Fair that everyone will pass through to enter - please see the Art Fair 21 entry and website for further information.

Also, a beatuiful catalog will be published for this exhibition. It will be available both in soft and hard cover editions; the hard cover edition is limited to 49 copies. Please see the link below where you can pre-order your copy of "The Mysterious Action of Memory" today.

David Hochbaum’s latest exhibition is about dreams and memory, and how the interpretation of both affects the reality we choose to live in. His images are layered both physically and historically, thus creating different sets of meaning that portray an inner landscape: do we shape our own reality, or is it shaped by our dreams? How can we be sure that what we remember is actually true? Do we not all interpret our past so it suits our present, is it not ever-becoming our future?

Berlin KRISTEN FERRELL: 100 Pieces of Madness. Opens September 12th 2008

Bild zur Meldung

New paintings, drawings and sculptures.

For her latest exhibition, Kristen Ferrell has outdone herself: in a veritable tour de force, she has created 100 works on wood and paper as well as sculptures. Thematically, her brightly colored works lie somewhere between Symbolism – with its depictions of illness, passion, vision and fantasy – and Surrealism. They bear witness to states of consciousness between delusion and reality, dreaming and waking: Ferrell’s world has a smile on its lips and yet its unsettling nature is an essential, defining part of her depictions – the shiny surface of her imagery is covered with tiny cracks. This hidden or openly displayed neurosis often comes with a good dose of irony which provides momentary relief to the soul’s torment, yet it does not make Ferrell’s statement any less relevant.

Berlin Brian Horton and Jason Shawn Alexander: OROBORUS. Life, Death, and the Spaces In-Between... Opening August 15th 2008

Bild zur Meldung

Bild zur Meldung

American artist Brian Horton, who was last at Strychnin Gallery in February with the SCARS Contest Germany, is back with new works in August. Exhibiting with him in Berlin for the first time will be fellow Los Angeles painter Jason Shawn Alexander, who has received a Silver Medal Award for his illustrative work from the Society of Illustrators (LA). Their two-man show is titled “Oroborus” and explores the cyclical nature of life.

The Oroborus, the image of a serpent eating its own tail, is an ancient symbol with universal meaning. Sometimes also depicted as a dragon, it is seen in variations in almost all cultures and civilisations, representing the cyclical and transitory nature of life in polar opposites – birth and death, creation and destruction, rise and fall, the beginning and the end – all contained in a circle that represents the continuity and infinity of the universe.

Berlin GROUP SHOW: HONEYTRAP. Opens in Berlin July 18th, 7 pm

An international group show featuring all female artists including: Ver Mar (USA), Nicoletta Ceccoli (Italy), Lesley Reppeteaux (France), Heather Watts (Canada), Catalina Estrada (Columbia), Diva (Spain), Mimi S. (Germany) and Mayo (UK) + guests.

A coy, superior female agent seduces a male enemy and obtains his secrets. Cunningly employed charms enchant an unsuspecting victim – “honeytrap” is a term used to describe the process of seduction in order to compromise, obtain secrets, prove someone’s infidelity, or otherwise put someone in an exploitable position.

Our idea of honeytraps is not only shaped by countless historical examples but also by popular culture such as movies, comics or espionage fiction: Honeytraps are an extremely popular plot device in all of these that mostly feature female agents trapping a male – just think James Bond and the countless times he had to fend off beautiful enemy spies, often the secret stars of the films.

However, honeytraps have entered public consciousness long before then. For one thing, they also appear in the Bible: Judith gained access to the enemies’ camp through her beauty and innocent manner, and she managed to enchant Holofernes and to gain his trust without giving in to his advances, only to behead him in his sleep when he lowered his guard. This scene became a classic in the arts and has among others been depicted by Botticelli, Lucas Cranach, Peter Paul Rubens and Gustav Klimt. What Strychnin Gallery is bringing you this July is a seductive international group show featuring all female artists from all over the world – art with a sweet dark twist.

London Chet Zar: Ugly American. Opens in London June 13th, 7 pm

Bild zur Meldung

Bild zur Meldung

If anyone is familiar with monsters, it is American artist Chet Zar. He explores them every day. They are part of his life, both professional and private. As a designer, special effects make-up artist, sculptor, and 3D animator for major Hollywood studios and rock bands such as Tool, he sketches, creates and builds them on a day to day basis – if you know the movies Hellboy, The X-Men, or The Ring, you have seen his creatures come alive. As a painter, Zar portrays them as they are: ugly. When you look at Chet Zar’s paintings, you will realize an inescapable truth: We are the monsters.

On Saturday, June 14th, Chet Zar will be signing the "Ugly American" catalogue that accompanies the exhibition at Orbital Comics & Collectibles. Between 3 and 5 pm, the artist will be at 148 Charing Cross Road in London - the first twenty copies will be given away for free, so come early! See the Orbital website for more details.

Berlin Laurie Lipton: The Sleep of Reason. Opens in Berlin June 20th, 7 pm

Bild zur Meldung

Works inspired by Francisco de Goya.
Breathtaking detail is one of the most astonishing characteristics of Laurie Lipton’s work. Her large format pencil drawings are created in the same manner the old masters used to paint: hundreds, if not thousands of little lines create areas of tone – a tedious way of drawing, yet one that allows her to achieve an amount of detail and luminosity that is almost unparalleled.

Lipton’s work brings out the strange and grotesque in everyday life. Aiming for a psychological Realism, her works for “The Sleep of Reason” were deeply inspired by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya ( 1746 - 1828 ). Goya, who has portrayed the horrors of his time quite realistically in his series of etchings titled “The Disasters of War,” yet has also created fantastic and mythological paintings such as “Colossus,” has been a tremendous influence on Lipton’s work.

Do you Nomi?

Strychnin Gallery and Res Pira Lab present an exhibition dedicated to German singer and performer Klaus Nomi. With his visionary performance art and black and white make-up, countertenor Klaus Nomi was a highly influential New Wave figure. One of the first well-known figures to die of AIDS, he remains a highly influential figure even 25 years after his death.

The following artists will be showing their work in the "DO YOU NOMI?" show:

Grand Opening Party for the All New
Paul Booth, Liorcifer, Tim Kern, Dan Marshall, Jeremiah Barba and Ethan Morgan welcome friends , fans and clients to come celebrate the Grand Opening of Last Rites’ new home. This spacious new crypt, not only gives these Artists plenty of room to explore their art, but also gives them the opportunity to offer collaborative painting and tattooing performances to a broader audience.

The Last Rites Crypt has always been known for its evocative decoration and haunting atmosphere as well. We are proud to say that our new studio continues to leave people speechless. Join us in celebrating the evolution of Last Rites; come be a part of our history in the making.

Private Screening of The ArtFusion Experiment Documentary
Guests will be treated to a special screening of Paul Booth's documentary “The ArtFusion Experiment.” Venture inside the collaborative artistry movement that Paul and Filip Leu brought to the tattoo world in 2000. This is the first opportunity to view Paul's directorial debut in its entirety. This much-anticipated film has been six years in the making and it will not be released until next year, so don't miss your chance to see it now!
Please note: There is limited seating in the Last Rites home theater so the film will play at scheduled times throughout the evening.

Live ArtFusion Performances
The ArtFusion performance is a timed event in which six artists rotate positions at six paper canvasses every three minutes. Rotation prevents any one artist from dominating the image while yielding a cohesive ‘fusion’ of styles from among all participating artists. This visual journey captivates audiences with the constant evolution of images in collaborative production. Each performance takes about an hour and a half and, within that time, provides suspense, tension, intrigue and eventual resolution. By creating ‘in the moment,’ the artists draw the audience into a visual journey that provides not only a fast paced evolution of individual pieces of art, but also the opportunity for people to witness pure and unhindered creative expression. The evening will feature multiple performances by internationally renowned tattoo artists such as Robert Hernandez, Benjamin Moss, Bob Tyrrell, and the Last Rites Crew. ArtFusion Experiment will auction all finished collaborations over the course of the evening with proceeds going to ICAF, where that money can celebrate and promote children's art, imagination and creativity globally.

Enter and Win a Collaborative Tattoo Session
Our guests will also witness first hand a unique and magical event as featured artists work simultaneously on the same tattoo, creating a unique style of art that can only arise from their collective energy. Collaborative tattooing has been called “the extreme sport” of tattoo art because it requires both extreme concentration from the participating artists and extreme stamina from the tattoo client. As many as six tattoo artists will work on the tattoo in groups of two or three, rotating their positions every 5 minutes. Once again, rotation is the key to an emergent fusion of artistic styles. The general public rarely gets the opportunity to see a custom freehand tattoo materialize from its elemental concept much less one with such epic scale and diverse contributions. We will select a client in a live drawing at the event. Tickets will be , with all proceeds going to ICAF.

Door Prizes and Giveaways
And of course music, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a few surprises!
Doors Open at 7:00 pm
